Ethiopia Gogugu Grade 1 - Filter Roast
Tasting Notes: floral, lollies, strawberry
Tucked away in the highlands of Uraga Woreda, the Gogogu Washing Station stands as the heart of Wate Gogogu Village. This wet mill brings together over 400 smallholder farmers who deliver only the ripest red cherries to produce exceptional coffee.
Guji, once considered part of Yirgacheffe and the broader Sidamo region, became its own recognized coffee-growing area in 2002. Named after the Oromo people who have cultivated coffee here for generations, Guji’s rich soil and high elevations make it one of Ethiopia’s most celebrated origins. The name Gogogu—meaning “dry” in Oromiffaa—reflects the region’s rugged, mountainous terrain.
Uraga’s volcanic soil and altitude provide ideal growing conditions that yield complex, high-quality coffees. Once overshadowed by other regions, Guji’s distinctive character now shines through.
At Gogogu Washing Station, only perfectly ripe cherries are accepted, weighed, and sorted before being de-pulped within 8–12 hours of harvest to maintain freshness. The beans then ferment in ceramic tanks for up to 72 hours, a method that enhances flavor clarity and consistency. After a brief soak and thorough washing, they are sun-dried on raised beds to a moisture level of about 12%.
Through this careful process—and the dedication of the farmers who nurture each harvest—Gogogu produces coffee that embodies Uraga’s landscape, culture, and enduring craft.
